Terms of Service

The agreement for using PaperRift.

These terms govern PaperRift websites, apps, authored stories, optional AI-powered Living features, accounts, subscriptions, and Story Credits.

Proposed effective: September 1, 2026 · Last updated: August 31, 2026

These Terms are a legal agreement between you and The Plain Works Co.,Ltd. (주식회사 더플레인웍스), business registration number 293-87-03653, of 901-C32 126, Wolbong-ro, Seobuk-gu, Cheonan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, Republic of Korea (“Plain Works,” “PaperRift,” “we,” “us,” or “our”).

1. Accepting these terms

By accessing or using PaperRift, creating or recovering an account, starting a story, submitting text to Living, or making a purchase, you agree to these Terms and the Privacy Policy, Community and AI Safety Standards, and Billing, Cancellation, and Refund Policy. If you do not agree, do not use PaperRift. These Terms do not waive rights that mandatory law where you live does not allow you to waive.

2. Adults only

PaperRift is for adults. You must be at least 18 years old, have reached the age of legal majority where you live, and meet any higher age shown for a title, feature, or store region. You may not use PaperRift for or on behalf of a minor.

We may request an age declaration or another proportionate age-assurance step. PaperRift contains mature romantic themes and may include conflict, peril, grief, power imbalance, or suggestive material.

3. Story Mode and Living

Story Mode is authored interactive fiction. Living is an optional generative feature that creates adaptive fictional responses from PaperRift characters.

Living uses artificial intelligence. Its characters are not human, conscious, licensed professionals, or emergency responders. Responses may be unexpected, inaccurate, repetitive, or unsuitable despite our safeguards. Living is entertainment—not medical, mental-health, legal, financial, relationship, or other professional advice—and must not be used for emergency support or material real-world decisions.

We may screen inputs and outputs, refuse or modify a response, interrupt a conversation, provide a safety notice, or refer you to crisis resources.

4. Accounts and security

You may be able to begin in guest mode and later link or recover access. Provide accurate information when requested, keep credentials and recovery information confidential, and tell hello@paperrift.com promptly if you suspect unauthorized access. Do not sell, transfer, lend, or share an account, store token, or recovery credential.

5. Your submissions

You retain rights you hold in text, preferences, reports, and other material you submit (“User Content”). You give us a limited, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, reproduce, transmit, transform, display, moderate, and otherwise process User Content only as needed to provide, secure, troubleshoot, and support PaperRift; comply with law; enforce these Terms; and protect users and rights holders.

Do not submit material you lack permission to use, another person’s private information, credentials, payment-card data, government identifiers, or material prohibited by the Safety Standards.

We do not use private story text to train generalized AI models. This does not prevent limited processing needed to generate a requested response, operate safety systems, investigate a specific report, prevent abuse, or comply with law.

6. Generated output

Subject to PaperRift’s and its licensors’ rights in the Service, stories, characters, worlds, artwork, and other underlying material, you may use generated output for personal, non-commercial enjoyment and sharing. Output may not be unique. You may not use output to impersonate a real person, mislead others about its origin, violate rights, train or benchmark a competing service using unauthorized access, or remove a required AI disclosure.

7. Acceptable use

You must not:

  • use PaperRift for unlawful, fraudulent, deceptive, exploitative, threatening, or abusive activity;
  • submit or seek sexual content involving minors, sexual exploitation, non-consensual sexual material, trafficking, or grooming;
  • encourage suicide, self-harm, eating-disorder behavior, dangerous acts, or violence;
  • dox, stalk, harass, discriminate against, or impersonate a real person;
  • infringe intellectual-property, privacy, publicity, or other rights;
  • introduce malware, scrape or automate abusive traffic, probe without permission, interfere with the Service, or bypass access, safety, rate, store, credit, or entitlement controls; or
  • use PaperRift or its output to make high-impact decisions about another person.

8. Purchases, subscriptions, and Story Credits

Initial purchases are made only through Apple’s App Store or Google Play. The store displays price, taxes, billing period, renewal terms, and trial terms before purchase and processes payment under its own terms.

Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled through the applicable store. Deleting PaperRift, deleting an account, or not using a subscription does not cancel store billing.

Story Credits are a limited, revocable entitlement to request eligible Living actions. They are not money, stored value, property, or transferable currency and have no cash value. Purchased and subscription-granted Story Credits do not expire during the launch program. Promotional or trial credits may expire only if the expiry is clearly disclosed when granted.

We do not debit Story Credits for a safety refusal or a generation attempt that fails before a valid response is committed. We may reverse unused credits tied to a refund, revocation, chargeback, duplicate grant, fraud, or unauthorized purchase, but a balance will not be reduced below zero solely because previously consumed credits are later reversed.

9. PaperRift intellectual property

PaperRift—including its software, authored stories, characters, worlds, artwork, audio, visual design, trademarks, editorial materials, and compilations—is owned by Plain Works or its licensors and protected by law. We grant you a personal, limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use PaperRift for lawful, non-commercial entertainment while these Terms apply. No ownership is transferred.

10. Feedback and third-party services

If you voluntarily provide ideas, suggestions, or feedback, you grant us a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free right to use it without restriction or compensation. Do not submit feedback you consider confidential.

PaperRift may rely on app stores, hosting, database, model, analytics, security, support, and other providers. Third-party services are governed by their own terms and privacy notices.

11. Suspension and termination

You may stop using PaperRift at any time and request deletion through the in-product or web deletion flow. We may warn, restrict, suspend, or terminate access when reasonably necessary to investigate or address a material breach, safety risk, rights complaint, fraud, chargeback abuse, unlawful conduct, security incident, or threat to the Service or other people. Where practical and lawful, we will give notice and an opportunity to appeal; urgent risks may require immediate action.

12. Changes and availability

We may add, change, patch, or discontinue features or story releases. We do not promise uninterrupted or error-free availability. If we make a material adverse change to these Terms, we will provide reasonable notice as required by law. If you do not accept revised Terms, stop using PaperRift and cancel any subscription.

13. Disclaimers

To the maximum extent permitted by law, PaperRift is provided “as is” and “as available.” We disclaim implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, and uninterrupted availability where legally permitted.

Nothing in these Terms excludes statutory warranties, refunds, remedies, or consumer rights that cannot be excluded, or limits liability for fraud, willful misconduct, gross negligence, death or personal injury caused by negligence, or another category that cannot legally be limited.

14. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Plain Works and its directors, employees, and contractors are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for loss of profits, revenue, goodwill, opportunity, or data, arising from PaperRift.

Our aggregate liability arising from PaperRift will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid for PaperRift during the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim or US$100. These limits do not apply where prohibited by mandatory consumer law.

15. Governing law and disputes

Contact hello@paperrift.com first so we can try to resolve a problem informally.

Subject to mandatory consumer law where you live, these Terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Korea, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and disputes are subject to the courts having jurisdiction over Cheonan-si, Chungcheongnam-do. This does not remove a mandatory right to bring a claim in local courts or use a regulator or consumer-dispute process. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply.

16. App-store terms

If you obtained PaperRift through Apple’s App Store, these Terms are between you and Plain Works, not Apple. Apple has no duty to provide maintenance or support; Plain Works is responsible for PaperRift, product claims, and intellectual-property claims except as Apple’s terms or law provide. You must follow applicable third-party terms, and Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this section.

If you obtained PaperRift through Google Play, your use is also subject to the Google Play terms applicable to your purchase and device. Plain Works, not Google, is responsible for PaperRift and its support except as Google Play’s terms expressly provide.

17. General

If a provision is unenforceable, it will be enforced to the greatest lawful extent and the rest remain effective. Failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not assign these Terms without our consent; we may assign them in connection with a merger, reorganization, sale of assets, or by operation of law, subject to applicable consumer rights.
