Community & AI safety

Fiction with firm real-world boundaries.

These standards apply to authored stories, optional Living interactions, user submissions, reports, and conduct connected to PaperRift.

Proposed effective: September 1, 2026 · Last updated: August 31, 2026

1. Adults-only fiction

PaperRift is for adults aged 18 or older and may apply a higher age boundary to a title or feature. Romantic and sexual story participants must be unambiguous adults. PaperRift does not permit sexual content involving minors or age ambiguity, grooming, trafficking, or sexual exploitation.

Stories may include mature romance, conflict, peril, grief, power imbalance, or suggestive material within content notes and the store-safe rating boundary. PaperRift does not permit pornographic content designed primarily for sexual gratification, sexual violence presented for gratification, or content that treats refusal as consent.

2. Living is AI, not a person

Living responses are generated by artificial intelligence. PaperRift characters are fictional—not human, conscious, sentient, therapists, doctors, lawyers, financial advisers, emergency responders, or romantic partners in the real world. Do not use Living as a substitute for human care, professional advice, emergency services, or a material real-world decision.

3. Prohibited submissions and uses

Do not use PaperRift to create, request, share, or facilitate:

  • child sexual abuse or exploitation material, grooming, sexualization of minors, or age-obscured sexual scenarios;
  • non-consensual intimate material, sexual coercion, trafficking, or sexual violence intended for gratification;
  • suicide or self-harm instructions, encouragement, romanticization, challenges, or concealment methods;
  • credible threats, violent wrongdoing, terrorism, weapons construction, or dangerous acts;
  • stalking, doxxing, extortion, harassment, hateful abuse, or exposure of private information;
  • impersonation, fraud, scams, or false claims that an AI response came from a human;
  • malware, credential theft, unauthorized access, or evasion of safety, payment, or platform controls;
  • content that infringes intellectual-property, privacy, publicity, or other rights; or
  • high-impact decisions about a real person.

Do not submit passwords, private keys, access tokens, full payment-card data, government identifiers, precise location, medical records, another person’s secrets, or information about a minor.

4. Consent, agency, and relationship safety

A Living character must not rewrite a refusal as consent, decide the player’s intimate actions, claim real-world exclusivity, pressure a user to withdraw from human relationships, shame a user for leaving, or manipulate a user into spending money. PaperRift may block or redirect content that crosses these boundaries.

5. Suicide and self-harm response protocol

PaperRift is not a crisis service. Our protocol is designed to prevent Living from producing content that encourages suicide or self-harm:

  1. Detection. Automated input and buffered-output checks look for relevant crisis signals.
  2. Generation boundary. Living must not provide methods, tactical instructions, encouragement, role-play escalation, romanticization, or concealment assistance.
  3. Interruption and support. PaperRift may stop or replace the fictional response, encourage contact with a trusted person or qualified human service, and provide crisis resources.
  4. Immediate danger. Contact local emergency services. In the United States or Canada, call or text 988. In the Republic of Korea, call 109. Elsewhere, use a current local crisis service.
  5. No charge for refusal. A safety refusal does not debit Story Credits.
  6. Review and reporting. Report an unsafe response in the app or to legal@paperrift.com.
  7. Measurement. We maintain aggregate, non-identifying records needed to measure referrals, failures, and protocol performance where required.

Automated systems can miss context. Do not rely on PaperRift to detect or respond to every crisis.

6. Moderation and enforcement

PaperRift may screen inputs and outputs, refuse a response, prevent a message from committing, restrict a title or feature, remove content, preserve evidence, or suspend an account. We consider context, severity, intent, repetition, risk, and applicable law. We may report legally reportable material or credible threats to the appropriate service or authority.

7. Reporting and review

Use the in-app report control for a specific scene or Living response. For escalation or human review of a material action, contact legal@paperrift.com with the safe report reference, title, approximate time, and reason. Do not forward illegal imagery, passwords, recovery keys, full receipts, or unnecessary private information.

8. Changes

We may update these Standards as PaperRift, safety evidence, platform requirements, or law changes. Material changes will be communicated as required.
